Why should you visit the campus before registering at a university?

Before you attend a university, you want to find out as many details as possible about the school, courses, professors, student life and activities.

Most universities offer virtual tours that allow you to see these details even if you can’t visit in person. Plus, you can connect with a university via social media.

However, there are some compelling reasons to visit a campus in person before you register.

Connect with real people

Your university experience will include interaction with real people, so take time to connect with people on the campus. Meet your program Dean, professors, staff and students as you put faces to names and connect personally with the university.

Compare several universities

After months of research, you may have narrowed down your selection to a few top universities. A visit allows you to compare your top choices, especially when you ask the same questions at each school. To decide which university is right for you, compare:

  • Academic programs
  • Course requirements
  • Classrooms and professors
  • Dorm rooms
  • Campus atmosphere
  • Athletic facilities
  • Clubs and activities
  • Dining facilities
  • Amenities
  • Safety

Discuss career options

Even though you’re only starting your academic journey, you want to find out as much as possible about your future career options. Schedule a meeting with the academic counselor. Talk about your potential career options, alumni performance and courses you need to take. With this information, you can ensure you’re on the right track to achieve your career dreams.

Finalize finances

Finances are an important part of your schooling. You may need help figuring out how much you’ll owe for classes, books, room and board, and other fees, though. Finalize your financial package, sign any necessary paperwork and discuss payment details when you visit the financial office in person.

Evaluate the campus environment

Kilroy J Oldster, author of Dead Toad Scrolls, shares that “Collegiate life presents a student with innumerable opportunities to engender personal growth by responding to a dynamic social, athletic, and academic environment.” On a guided tour, you get to evaluate all the details of the campus environment. Do you feel comfortable? Is it the right size? How are the food, gym and library? Do the students seem happy? Can you see yourself attending this school?

Talk to students

The admissions officers, university website and other literature can tell you a lot about the school, but you will want to hear from real students, too. They can tell you details about campus life, academic requirements and activities as they give you a unique perspective. Be sure to ask if the university meets their expectations and if they’d choose the university again.

Confirm your decision

As one of 19.5 million tertiary education students, you may be fairly certain that you want to attend a particular university. An on-campus visit can confirm your decision. Seeing the campus in person gives you a better sense of what the school is like, if it’s a good fit for you and if you’re a good fit for it.

A visit to the university campus is an important part of your decision-making process. It gives you beneficial information you can’t get from other sources. Before choosing your university, make sure you visit the campus at least once.
